New Links

Recently I’ve added several new links to blogs and websites, and it’s about time I talk about them.

In the Local Links section (scroll down to the blue banner below), I’ve added links to the Preservation Association of CNY and Syracuse Guru.

Pacny banner 2013The Preservation Association of CNY (PACNY) was founded in 1974.  They are “dedicated to the conservation of our area’s historic architecture, neighborhoods and mainstreets, preserving the past through adaptive reuse to serve as a living part of our community.”  Their site includes a blog about events and news about local history, links to related sites of interest, and more.  Resources such as this are important to anyone, especially writers, wishing to know an area’s history.  As the site asks, “Imagine our community without its older buildings, parks and monuments.”

Syracuse Guru is self-described as the “Experts in Fun.” At least as it relates to Central New York.  The site gathers reviews of local restaurants, arts and music. From these, they select their Top Picks for things to do in CNY.  Looking to know what’s happening on any given weekend or weeknight?  Syracuse Guru has a guide listing events with details and links for more information.  With a search function and navigation bar, it’s quite easy to find something of interest.  Syracuse Guru is “committed to enriching the Syracuse lifestyle and were founded on one concept: to provide expert recommendations to our readers.”

I’ve also added a new section to my Links Page for CNY blogs/websites.  With so many blogs and websites on the internet, it can be daunting to find ones that are local.  As I find voices of interest, I’ll gather them on my Links page.  To start, I’ve listed Eat First, Green Room Reviews, and Humans of Syracuse.

EatFirst bannerEat First is the “diary of a food-loving Central New Yorker.”  It’s the blog of Margaret McCormick, a former food editor for the Syracuse Post-Standard.  In addition to covering information about local vineyards, organic farms, and food events, the site discusses cuisine from a CNY perspective and often includes recipes.  The blog began in January 2014 with a post about NYS products on the Thruway.

Green Room Reviews is for the theatre lover.  The site strives to be “a virtual green room,” a place to go before seeing the latest theatrical production in Syracuse and CNY from Famous Artist shows to Syracuse Stage productions to local theater groups.  The site launched in August 2011 with the first reviews, including Syracuse Stage’s “The Turn of the Screw“, appearing in September 2011.  Green Room Reviews occasionally features audio previews, includes a list of links to CNY venues, and profiles the writers who’ve contributed to the blog.

Humans of Syracuse is a Facebook photo blog.  Photographer Kathe Harrington features the faces of the CNY community along with a few scenic shots.  The site was featured in a Syracuse.com article in December 2012.  Inspired by Humans of New York and other “Humans of…” art projects, the Syracuse version launched in May 2012.

So learn more about Syracuse and Central New York on the pages of these blogs/websites.  I hope to add more local sites over time.
