Friday Cocktail

Amaretto Sour

This month’s Friday Cocktails all share something in common: Amaretto.  Though there are different brands around, my favorite–and perhaps the easiest to find–is Amaretto di Saronno with its distinctive rectangular bottle and black square cap.  This Friday’s amaretto drink is certainly one of my favorites…an Amaretto Sour.

Amaretto di Saronno

What you’ll need:  Amaretto, sour mix or lemon juice, maraschino cherries, and a slice of orange; granulated sugar (optional).

Pour 3 ounces Amaretto and 1 ounce sour mix or lemon juice into a shaker over cracked ice.  Shake and thenstrain into a rocks glass over cubed ice.  Garnish with a maraschino cherry or two and an orange slice.  The rim of the glass may be coated with lemon juice and dipped in granulated sugar if you wish.  And of course, you could use freshly squeezed lemon juice instead.

How I like it:  There are a lot of recipes available for this relatively easy to make drink.  A lot call for 1 1/2 ounce of Amaretto and 1 or 2 splashes or a 1/2 ounce of sour mix (or lemon juice).  Sometimes the proportions really depend on the size of the glass you use.  It’s best served in a rocks glass, but as the above photo suggests, other choices are possible.  I used the 3 to 1 proportions with lemon juice.  I’m not crazy about mixes.  It doesn’t have to be fresh lemon juice, but I’ll skip the mix if possible.

One note about amaretto drinks, especially this one.  It’s very easy to drink several so take it slow.  And as always, drink responsibly!
