Friday Cocktail

Lemon Drop

Pucker up for this week’s Friday Cocktail, the Lemon Drop.

It’s difficult to unearth the history of this sweet drink, but it appears to date back as far as the 1970s, likely invented on the West Coast of the U.S. where it was quite popular.

What you’ll need:  Vodka, Lemon Juice, and Sugar.  Optionally, Triple Sec and Grenadine or Chambord.

Coat a martini glass with lemon juice and rim the glass with granulated sugar.  Pour 1 1/2 ounce vodka and 3/4 ounce of lemon juice into a shaker over cracked ice.  Toss in about a teaspoon of sugar.  Optional, add in 1/2 ounce of triple sec (or cointreau).  Shake and then strain into a cocktail glass.

How I like it:  Many recipes exclude the triple sec when serving this drink, but I think that makes it too tart.  I prefer it with the triple sec.  I also like about a dash of chambord (or one could use grenadine) which I try to layer in the bottom of the glass.  Although in the pictured drink, it unfortunately didn’t layer, and the drink turned pink.  But really, when you think about it, you could use pink lemonade in place of the lemon juice.

Either way you try it, drink responsibly.
